Angie Frame, founder of Grandma Zook’s Bakery & Produce, and her husband Kenny, a fourth generation Frame, bought the family property on Pottstown Pike in West Vincent 16 years ago. With a produce stand as part of the property, Angie tried operating the stand when her four sons were very young, finally giving it up after one year to focus on raising her sons. The stand was then leased to someone who operated it as Pearl’s Market for 10 years until it closed in 2016. Now, with four grown sons, Angie saw the golden opportunity to give it another try.

To do it the “right way” this time, Angie sought the help and guidance of SCORE. The SCORE Business Plan guide helped Angie to organize her ideas into a business plan. Angie then met with her SCORE mentors John Nelson and John Houseman, who helped her focus on the important things, while avoiding potential pitfalls. With their encouragement, Angie streamlined her menu items and prioritized the many activities required to get the business up and running. Starting a business proved to be extremely challenging, but timely phone calls, personal store visits and advice by her mentors provided the encouragement Angie needed to persevere and succeed.

After opening two years ago, the business is thriving. Grandma Zook’s Bakery & Produce has met every annual business goal and carries no debt. While the menu is adaptable throughout the year, Grandma Zook’s offers a wide selection of home baked goods, fresh pressed juices and smoothies, local and organic produce, fresh made sandwiches on home-made bread, local made ice cream, specialty grocery items, plants and seasonal items. More than just a bakery and produce store, Grandma Zook’s is becoming a favorite local stopping place. Angie is proud that her store is a caring place for the community.
